Mountain Pastures Dairy Company
Because of Cantera’s access to a variety of business and government contacts combined with our success in the international community, Cantera developed a unique Private/Public Partnership with the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) build a dairy processing plant in Afghanistan.

Mountain Pastures will have the capacity to produce up to 30,000,000 units annually of shelf-stable milk, juice and bottled water. In addition to providing 150 – 200 jobs for citizens in the area, it will also be a venue for local farmers to sell their milk. Aga Khan will also develop agricultural education programs for farmers wishing to increase their production of ready-to-sale milk for processing.

The plant will begin operation the first quarter of 2008 and is the largest agribusiness private investment project in the region. The model for Mountain Pastures Dairy Company is a reflection of Cantera’s unique ability to work with a variety of entities to help fulfill a partner’s goal.

Education Dairy & Nutrition Program
In conjunction with the Aga Khan Foundation, Cantera implemented the Foundation’s Education Dairy & Nutrition Program (EDNP) in Afghanistan, Kazahkstan and Tajikstan. Aga Khan received surplus commodities of milk powder through USDA’s section 416(b). The Foundation then approached Cantera to organize the development, production, transportation and distribution of shelf-stable milk, a product that doesn’t require refrigeration.

With Cantera’s assistance the Foundation provides over 80,000 units of milk per day to women and school-age children. For many children in the region the milk is the only fortified food they receive on a daily basis. The milk is distributed at the schools encouraging children to attend classes and obtain an education.
